Paul Hogan made his World Championship debut back in 1995, reaching the quarter-finals on that occasion. He put in a superb display at the 2017 BDO World Darts Championship, beating Martin Phillips to set up a meeting with world number one Glen Durrant, and came close to a major upset - racing into a 3-0 set lead and 2-0 in legs after winning 11 of the opening 13 legs. Serving for the match on double-16 with 16 required, Hogan burst his score, and Durrant fought back to snatch a 4-3 win on his way to lifting the title.

He bounced back by qualifying for the UK Open at Minehead once again, beating Keegan Brown and Jamie Lewis in the first two rounds before knocking out back-to-back world champions Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis to reach the last 16, where he lost to eventual runner-up Gerwyn Price.

On the weekend of 25-26 March, Hogan turned out for England at the BDO British Internationals. On the Saturday he beat Wales's Martin Phillips 4-3 in legs with a 30.10 one-dart average (90.30 three-dart), part of a 12-0 whitewash of Wales. The following day England beat Scotland 10-2 to take the title, with Hogan's 4-1 win over Alan Soutar notable for a nine-darter thrown in the fifth and deciding leg.

He also reached the last 32 of the Winmau World Masters on four occasions - in 1989, 1998, 2003 and 2014.
